Work began the other day on prepping for our trip. I was thinking about how the forty-year-old seats in the goat weren’t as comfortable as they were when I bought my car fifteen years ago.
Over the years when I would clean the car it was almost as if some squirrels were trying to build a condominium with the packing that was falling out of the seats. So I figured I’d consult my friend, Jerry at Master Upholstery, on which vendor I should use to rebuild my seats. Jerry answered the phone as always, “Master’s,” and after telling him about the Lincoln Highway trip we were planning he said “Johnny just bring the car up here.”
He had a set of Mercedes AMG seats, templates to align and years of experience. A couple of hours later we had placed two incredibly comfortable seats, which had driver and passenger sitting lower improving safety & visibility. They even have seat heaters which on a convertible could be priceless…although I don’t expect to need them this trip. All Jerry had to say when we were done was “you’ll be calling me when you cross the Mississippi to say thank you!” I was calling him before I got home!!!
Just like I recommend to my customters, I decided to perform all the usual checks before a road trip — brake, fluids, tires and suspension were pretty normal. Except one of the wheel bearings was in the first stages of failing, it would have never seen the Mississippi. While the brakes were OK there were some things I didn’t love about the stopping abilty of cars from the sixties. Thanks to my friend Troy, the ol’ goat is ready to go.
