For as great as BMW is, they are not without an occasional annoyance. Check out this list to see if you can relate to any of these common BMW issues.
Do you smell burning oil when stopped at a traffic light?
Problem: You may not realize it because you won’t see oil on the ground or the floor of your garage, but BMW engines will leak oil. As the oil leaks out, the belly pan catches it. The oil then blows off into the air stream coating the exhaust and cats.
Solution: Whether it’s oil leaking from a valve cover gasket, clogged breather trap or the oil filter housing, we solve those problems all day long. That means you can trust Shade Tree Garage’s service technicians to find the leak and fix it so you can quickly get your BMW back on the road.
How great are those BMW electric water pumps?
Problem: Sure, they save fuel because they vary the velocity of water flowing through the motor based on engine temperature and load. That is, until the impeller falls apart or the electrical connector overheats. Then, all you see are lights popping on the dash and you notice the engine power is reduced. We’ve even seen it where leaves trapped between the radiator and a/c condenser causing hot running.
Solution: At Shade Tree Garage, our certified technicians have the experience and tooling to replace the failed components. Once completed, they will evacuate the system eliminating any air pockets.
What about those poly-ribbed serpentine belts?
Problem: The poly ribbed serpentine belts used by BMW are vastly superior to the v-belts of old. So reliable, in fact, they almost never get looked at… that spells trouble. The idler pulleys and tensioners can cause misalignment of the belt and when that happens look out. The belt starts chaffing on the vibration damper and if the belt comes apart the debris destroys everything nearby. We’ve seen a/c compressor clutches ruined and front crankshaft seals leaking oil by the quart from the debris.
Solution: We inspect the belt alignment at every service. If we find the belt on your BMW becomes misaligned, we have the skill and tools to put everything back to original.
Is your BMW fuel system causing engine performance issues?
Problem: There has been a big change in the BMW fuel systems that sprayed fuel behind the valves or into the manifold. Those old systems kept the valves clean and prevented carbon from building on the back of the valves. Modern direct injection systems now spray fuel into the cylinder which gives your BMW its amazing power and great fuel mileage. This allows crankcase vapors to condense and accumulate on the intake valves robbing power. When the valves go bad, you will notice engine misfires. Sometimes the check engine light will come on, sometimes not. It doesn’t occur on every BMW engine. It seems to have more to do with how you drive your BMW and how frequently you change the oil.
Solution: The only solution is remove the intake manifold. And, like your dentist, we blast the carbon buildup on the valves, then scrape the heavy stuff with plastic picks. And when cleaned, it’s just like when you leave the dentist, it feels so much better!
